Jotaka Eaddy received a text from an activist friend with a link to President Joe Biden’s letter announcing his exit from the 2024 presidential race while sitting on her parents’ porch in South Carolina. Eaddy, founder of the grassroots group Win With Black Women, rallied other Black women political organizers to support Vice President Kamala Harris after hearing about Biden’s endorsement. They organized a Sunday night Zoom call that attracted thousands of attendees and raised $1.5 million for Harris’ campaign. Black women organizers across the country are mobilizing and planning voter registration efforts and campaign events to help Harris secure a historic win. Harris’ sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., is partnering with other Black Greek letter organizations for a voter mobilization campaign. Black female voters are excited to have a candidate they identify with who will fight for their issues. However, Harris will face challenges in winning over voters who are unhappy with Biden’s record. Black women organizers are prepared to defend Harris against racist and sexist attacks, and they believe they will have a significant impact on voter turnout in November.
