How a Drum Line Director Spends Her Sundays
For most of her life, a woman named Stacy Kovacs has been passionate about drumming. She is the founder of Fogo Azul NYC, a drum line specifically for women and individuals who identify as transgender or nonbinary. Kovacs, who works as a physician assistant at NewYork-Presbyterian, started playing the piano at a young age and later took up drumming. Despite the lack of female drummers in the 1980s, she actively pursued her love for drumming. Over the years, Kovacs has performed in various countries and events, including the Carnival in Salvador, Brazil. In 2016, she established Fogo Azul NYC, which initially had 14 drummers and has now grown to include 132 members aged 14 to 89. Kovacs resides in Astoria, Queens, with her two rescue cats.
