Thailand passes landmark bill recognising marriage equality
·1 min
Thailand’s Senate passed a marriage equality law, making it the third territory in Asia to recognize same-sex couples. The law gained support from upper house lawmakers and will be sent for royal approval before coming into force. LGBTQ+ advocates emphasized the significance of this step, as Thailand would become the first country in Southeast Asia to have marriage equality legislation. The country’s existing LGBTQ+ culture and tolerance already attract many tourists. The bill is the result of years of activism and political efforts. In June, a Pride Month parade was attended by Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, highlighting support for the LGBTQ+ community.
